In front of a record crowd of 275,000 in downtown Detroit, the Chicago Bears drafted Caleb Williams as the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, as expected.

A phenom behind center, Williams won the Heisman Trophy in 2022 by throwing 4,537 yards and 42 touchdowns. He became just the second Trojans quarterback to be selected with the first pick since Carson Palmer in 2003 and the sixth USC player to be taken at the top of the draft.

After being selected, he spoke about his enthusiastic embrace of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on the first night of the draft.

"I didn't know how I was going to react in the moment," Williams explained. "I was trying to think through it in my head throughout the process, but nothing feels better than actually being in the moment, actually getting that call. You know, I don't feel nervous, I don't feel any of that. I was anxious and ready to go, just ready to get the call so I could walk out there on stage and just finally be back on a team is honestly what I'm excited for."

With Williams leading the way, six of the first 12 picks were quarterbacks, a new record for the NFL Draft.

Jayden Daniels of LSU was taken No. 2 overall by the Washington Commanders, and the New England Patriots chose North Carolina's Drake Maye at No. 3.

Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison Jr., the son of Hall of Famer and Indianapolis Colts legendary wide receiver Marvin Harrison Sr., was selected at number 4.

The Los Angeles Chargers chose Notre Dame offensive tackle Joe Alt, the New York Giants selected wide receiver Malik Nabers from LSU, and the Tennessee Titans picked JC Latham, an offensive tackle from Alabama.

Rounding out the top 10 picks, the Atlanta Falcons selected Washington’s quarterback Michael Penix Jr., the Bears chose Rome Odunze, a wide receiver from Washington, and the Minnesota Vikings (via trade with New York Jets), selected J.J. McCarthy, a quarterback from Michigan.

Another draft record was set when the first 14 selections were offensive players. UCLA defensive end Laiatu Latu at No. 15 broke the streak afterward when he was selected by the the Indianapolis Colts.

Playing host to the draft, Hall of Famer Barry Sanders and rap legend Eminem kicked off the event, welcoming everyone to their city.
