Cool [H] Power Behind The Power.....Top Blacks in the Obama Administration
.......Top Blacks in the Obama Administration.........................Individually, They Hold Some of the Most Powerful Positions in Washington. But get the top African-Americans in President Barack Obama's Administration together, and the pretense and formality of their titles disappear. No handshakes here. Only hugs and kisses, some good natured ribbing and shared brother-and-sister-hood...............................U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice--perhaps the smallest person in the room--greets Attorney General Eric Holder--the tallest person in the room--with a bear hug..................................Lisa Jackson, Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, and Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett, trade stories with U.S. Representative Ron Kirk and Melody Barnes, White House Domestic Policy Council Director. And Rob Nabors, Deputy Director of the Office of Management and Budget, chats with Joshua Dubois, Director of the White House Council for faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, and Mike Strautmanis, the Chief of Staff to the Assistant to the President for Intergovernmental Relations and Public Liason..........................................Brought together by Ebony Magazine on the White House grounds for the first time since Inauguration Day, they are part of a team put together by the president to carry forth his vision for the country. With one look at the historic collection of dynamic advisers--12, the most African Americans ever in such high-powered positions within the White House--it is obvious that change has already come to the nations capitol..........................They follow in the footsteps of other Blacks in top positions with previous White House administrations. While no other president has had more Blacks throughout his top staff like Obama has done, Presedent Johnson, Ford, Carter, Reagan and the elder Bush each had one Black in their Cabintets. Clinton had five. George W. Bush had four......................................But this new group of leaders will most certainly chart their own course. Holder wants to strengthen the country's enforement of Civil Rights laws. Jackson will tackle environmental justice problems that plague Black communities, while making sure that all Americans are included in the new "green" economy. Barnes wants Domestic Policy to always embrace urban America. If her previous State Department experience is any indication, Rice will bring the needs of Africa to the forefront of the world community......................................."People are excited again about the United States. They see us as fulfilling our Promise and potential, and once again being a beacon of leadership and hope for the rest of the world," Rice told Ebony. And in the first month, Social Secretary Rogers has brought Sweet Honey in the Rock, Earth Wind & Fire, and Stevie Wonder to perform at the White House, while quietly working to bring green-friendly de'cor to the First Residence. Not to mention that Rogers, the sister with the Harvard Education, has managed to get grits put on the White House breakfast menu...........................................In addition, behind the scenes there is Mona Sutphen, Deputy Chief of Staff under Rahm Emanuel. A graduate of the London School of Economics, she brings her Foreign Policy expertise to discussions about the economy and international issues. Bill Burton, the Duputy Press Secretary, is helping to manage the daily--sometimes hourly--flow of information from the White House and needs of the White House Press corps.............................................These powerful individuals, coupled with dozens of other senior-level African-Americans throughout the Cabinet's Executive Departments, including Justice, Homeland Security, and Labor, Embody the essecnce of the Ebony Power 150.

Thanks for posting that.  And to the whites who read that as saying Obama's black, so he picked blacks or minorities to work with him, I just have to say: where was this talk when for hundreds of years, whites were our presidents and mainly whites worked with the president?

Re: Power Behind The Power.....Top Blacks in the Obama Administration
Its nice to see Blacks gaining in positions of authority. However, just because they're Black does not mean they are for Black people. Since Obama won, many Black people have been caught up with "my president is Black". So what? We had 43 White presidents and most of them did more to hurt this nation than to help it. Most middle class Whites and Blacks can't say that they are better off than they were twenty years ago. What do Black Americans think Obama is going to do for them? Will their lives be better becau*102*he president or worse? If you were unemployed, do you have a great job now? If you were living in the hood, are you now living on easy street? The power behind the power is not the president or his administration! Most people are not aware of who is really running the show and you won't learn about it on CNN.
