Re: Hip Hop vs. America - Tune In & Discuss The Series - September 25 and 26 at 8 p.m. (ET/PT)
Why is the panel all black? If this is about Hip Hop, than why isn't there any diversity in the discussion? Hip Hop is not black. Where is Rick Rubin, a white man who should be recognized as a Godfather to Hip Hop alongwith Russell Simmons. If not for Rubin, there would have been no Public Enemy nor a Def Jam at all.
Where are the Hispanic b-boys & graffiti artists who helped mainstream Hip Hop?
I am not 100% black or 100% white. I am 50% Mexican, 25% Black & 25% White. I am Hip Hop.
BET continously segregates Hip Hop while at the same time preaching about "breaking down the social barriers." Why is it the only hispanic videos they play are of Reggaeton artists? Why is it the only white people they play are backed up by a black producer?
This show is no where close to deserving the title of 'Hip Hop vs America.' This show is only about black Hip Hop vs black America.
BET can knock down these barriers by diversifying their programs. I hear complaints that shows on other channels are made up of a primarily white cast with only one or two actors being black. But when BET has a chance to come up with an original program, what do they do? They cast a primarily black crew with one or two white actors. They fight fire with fire, racism with racism.
It's time that someone steps in with the right idea and diversify these programs. Cast a show where the cast is not a majority of a specific race. Open it up to where the cast is so many different colors it looks like a rainbow.
I Am Hip Hop

my kudos to this person because i was feelin the same way when i read my program guide and it only said 8-9pm. i was shocked because this issue is too big for it only be one hour long. and bet being the only black channel needs to do some changing because back in the day bet had shows that stimulated both education and enertainment. now while i do watch hell date from time to time why dont we have the bet nightly news back on the channel to keep those informed on whats going on in america not just during those commercial breaks have news breaks or tonight with travis smiley to show that we as blacks can do positive things and do know whats going on in the community. BET needs to work the kinks out because ever since you were sold to viacom its turned into a black MTV something just isnt right.

im tired of RAPPERS SAYING,'' WELL IT ALL BEGINS AT HOME'' then they continue by saying,'' well the parents need to be making sure that these kids dont watch these videos''.First off most of the kids these days dont have 2 parenets in the house so while mom is at work and the father is gone acting like a 15 year old,the kid has all the acsses to the television and growing up without a positive romodel the kid think's well this is how i should act or this is what i should do because these rappers on tv are doing it and so are my freinds. So i think that these dudes on tv need to step up and deliver a positive messege to the kids. Not that im saying all hip hop video's have to be positive you can have some hadcore *73* here and there it's healthy but when you crowd the video's with gansta *73* and no positive messeges it's a apitie for disaster.
and yes television is 50% responsible for raising our children who else do our kid's listen to or take after?
i dont like what t.i said about selling records,he said,''if i gotta put some naked women in my videos or talk about guns to sell record's ill do it.
first off this is hip hop you dont portray somthing like guns and naked women to sell records your suppose to try to be the best lyricsist and make creative videos,if you come out the box swinging and sticking to one plan''to be the best'' people will respect you more for who you are, rather than selling your self out over some ho's and ice trying to sell records, no one can respect that well at least i can't and im not judging him im just putting my 2 cents in.
hip hop is still alive but it's slowly turning in to hip-pop,these wack rapper's dont make creative videos any more, what happend to movie type videos with a plot a beggening and a end remember the fugees when they where runing away from the helicopter's and in sub-mariens, biggy's video when hes running from the cop's driving backwards with his car and trying to escape on a boat, i miss that *73*.now you throw some money in the air get naked *55* pop a few bottles talk about how fun selling drug's are and wow your a millionair over night and you didnt even have to use your brain.
MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY
WHAT THE HELL, rappers been making money sence 85 so why the *8* would you talk about it now,i remeber rakim's video ''dont sweat the techniqe'' he was rapping in a million dallar house and had women in bathing suites.but none of his lyrics even refferd to that, and he had big *** gold chains on him and the man still didnt menchin it,he just talked about how nice he was with the rhymes.that's reall *73* all these rappers nowa days are like lil attention whore look at me look at me im rich im rich MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY CARS CARS CARS HIP-POP

Forgive me if I stray abit away from your topic I don't mean to sound silly but I have a lot to say about the way this forum was handled...No offense but it seems he answered your question about the credit card swipe..it wasn't even his idea...that was the young lady symbolizing herself and what the tip is for...shes selling herself so talk to her about that not Nelly... Plus it may sound bad to degrade women, and hey if some cases when its not true it is degrading...but if the shoes fits...but its like they said you can feel what you want but if you as a women don't do the things that they're talkin about then don't take offense but young men like myself and I'm married with children a little girl and a newborn son...I've seen girls from when I was in Highschool go from the fly girls in school to the *** at the strip club...and not to pay for her college classes, but to keep gettin her hair and nails done...Now am I wrong for saying this...not to me because its the truth...not my truth but the reality of the situation..its not the music that makes things bad...its the music relateting to what we see day in an day out...even corporate america knows women are talked about for what men in the office think about them so lay off of hip hop, for things in our community being bad and talk to bob johnson for selling BET to the white folks....you have a problem with nelly and TI doing they thing to make money holler at the people out side of rap for leavin us hangin...because lets be real this hip hop vs. America thing is something directed at young blacks, because I don't see the black folks criticize Eminem, he's not on the panel and he says somw super crazy stuff because he talks about things that was wrong inhis up bringing...but he's white...so we don't care the same...women have been strippin before nelly made Tip Drill and it didn't stop there....go talk to the many of women in the video and ask why were they willing to do the things in the video, and lets see what they have to say...

Re: Hip Hop vs. America - Tune In & Discuss The Series - September 25 and 26 at 8 p.m. (ET/PT)
First off I got to say, if you don’t understand something don’t talk about it. You don’t need to go bad mouthing or pointing the finger at something you don’t understand. So there is no need for people go and compare Rock/Heavy Metal to Hip-Hop they are two different things. Generally speaking rock and heavy metal deal with emotional states of the mind, where as hip-hop deals with societal relationships or things they experience in day to day life, unless you are Kanye West. But this is in broad terms only, so basically what you see on TV is what I am talking about. And addressing that one guys comment on why hasn’t anyone targeted rock or heavy metal; you need to do some homework man. Because maybe it is not being address so much in these last several years but if you look back 10, 20 years ago or how bout something more resent with the Columbine shooting you’ll find all that you need to know.
I agree that people tend to target things that which they don’t understand. But for the most part, and I don’t mean to offend anybody because yes heavy metal and rock are aggressive even in the way that they sound, but in today’s society it is not the music of choice for those committing inner-city street and gang violence. Majority of times you will not see a person who listens to rock or heavy metal want to defend a territory so badly that they don’t care if they kill or die over it. And that’s what I believe to be what the media is attaching on to.
I believe a lot of it has to do a great deal with bad parenting. If you are not instilling standards, morals, and respect at home, how can we as a society expect anyone to act decent towards each other? And I know a lot of people are Churchgoers, but what happens when you are outside the Church? Do act the same way? What is the purpose of even going to Church if once your outside the walls you are a completely different person? Oh, well I could just go back to Church and repent for all my sins. That ain’t right.
The saying “Do as I say, not as I do” is bull. Because how do you expect a person to respect you or listen to what you have to say when you don’t even live by what you preach? Especially your kids because they are the most impressionable ones.
I remember passing by a group of Hispanic students from an elementary school, who happened to be visiting the college campus. I remember hearing the teacher ask the students if they wanted to go to college, and one kid replied I can’t because the white man is putting us down and would stop us from going to school. And I remember thinking in my head is this something that is really happening or have we institutionalized ourselves to thinking this way. Because the teacher they had was white and he was there encouraging them to take the opportunity to go to college and get a better education. I do believe that peer pressure, in not so well to do inner city districts or even suburbs, put a lot of stress on the people that they go to school with forcing them to conform to society. So that if one kid is more distinguished than the others academically, he or she is looked down upon. And in order to displace blame, the mentality of their society is to point the finger and say it is because of the white man.
Pointing the finger at leaders, or other people is not going to do anything about a problem. If you want something done you have to do it yourself. If we want something to change in the way that the government works, we have to ban together as a people united to make a change. But that is only if we can get people to work with each other, and the majority of people would much rather complain about something than do anything about it.
I don’t get why we feel the need to differentiate each other. Your white, your black, your hispanic, your asain. Who cares? You are you. You are John, you are Dominique, you are Gustavo; it doesn’t matter you are just you. And you should embrace your cultural heritage to understand where you came from; it’s a good thing. But when you are using it to such a degree that you shut yourself off from being able to create an existence that is not determined by labels or ethnicities, that is wrong. Martin Luther King Jr. said that he wanted his children to grow up in a society where they are not judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. It is the content of a person’s character that should be the determining factor of how you perceive a person, not by whether or not they are white, black, hispanic, asain, middle-eastern…whatever.
Being good to each other means being good to everyone.

I agree with most of the viewpoints on the post. But i think there needs to be more discussion about the seperation of music for all ages and strictly adult material. Lets face it not everything is meant for twelve year olds nor should it be. I think people should have the right to listen to and watch what they like. But i dont think it should be on tv all times of the day. I think there needs to be some discussion of putting on strictly obscene videos on later at night and not on the same time with kid themed shows.I think there should be more talk of restricting explicit videos, dvds and music by having ratings like at the movies pg, pg-13, r and x and not allowing certain purchases without proof of age.

Ok again this is all over the place..no offense to you either because I'm not tryin to argue with nobody but I've had conversations with people about this...you say that the rappers say that things start in the home well they do...stop letting TV raise your kids and do your job...what did the parent do to make sure the kid can't watch certain programs...every cable sompany has a means to block certain channels...I can do it in cali so I'm sure everybody else can but I like hip hop...the things thats a lil too out of control I won't let my daughter watch...but she loves some hip hop Harry so I let her watch that..but I was raised by a single mother for the most part , my dad was around just not in the house...I still knew right from wrong and so did my brothers but they chose to f up even tho my mother taught them other wise...I didn't do it because I knew it wasn't the right thing to do...stop blaming hip hop and put the blame where it should be...in the Home, exactly where it should be...all learnin starts in the home...we as a people need to learn how to seperate something we listen to for entertainment and something we think we're going to run out and do ourselves...i doubt biggie ran from the cops in reverse, but it was entertaining to watch so lets call it what it is or tell them to stop makin movies like casino and scarface and goodfellas, why are u worried about that...oh my bad these peoples aren't young blacks so we won't make them take their place in the blame game...this mess is crazy...rap it entertainment and my mother taught me right from wrong not NWA...it just sound as good as the black people on def poetry jam rhymin spittin the truth...or any local hang out with poets and a bunch of finger snappin...think about it

It was a tight show. I attended the screening. Although some people expressed that they would've rather seen other people on the panel, i don't think many rappers were diving head-first at the chance to be put in the line of fire (panel). I think there may have been an issue of reluctancy from the many whom were asked to appear. So really, T.I. and Nelly should be commended for their appearance.

Re: Hip Hop vs. America - Tune In & Discuss The Series - September 25 and 26 at 8 p.m. (ET/PT)
Let me comment on this. First off I agree with T.I, Nelly, and P for the most part. This is my question why is hiphop being blamed for everything that the youth are doing? Where are there parents. Not only that whi is it a big problem that we as black people are in video shakin are butts nad showing guns and cussing. Why is that so wrong? When white folks do it to. Not only that so waht's the deal with Coco and Ice T. So it's wrong cause he black and he showings sex in his vdeo, but she his girlfriend a pron star and white and it's her body in which she slutting. But when it comes down to it the artist is wrong. Why? These women make there on decision, you can not blame the artist nor the directors. If these femlaes say no then waht else can these artist do. Not only that is is supply and demand people no goodness well if videos ain't have guys and girl in it half naked dancing aint nobody going to watch it. Believe it or not sex do sell and that what makes people watch the video. Who got on the smipiest oufit, the baddest chick or dude, the guy and chest the girl and her breast and ***. That's reality of it cause thats on an off tv sex sells. When I'm in the mall dudes gawk and make comments about my *** cause that's what pull them for the most part looks. Not only that people kill me T.I was right when he said he's talking baout that lifestyle instead of continuing to do it. come on now Master P ain't going to sell no records doing the abc cause alot of these people who the music is for is not living there life like the Jefferson there living like the Evans. They see roaches, rats, drugs, tricks, and guns and stuff like that. It's wrong for us to have flavor of love, but waht about love with Bret michaels or whatever the rock-n-roll guy in vh1 name. His show the damn smae not only that look at all the sluts and fights on real world and 9 times out of ten there white. s why does we as black people got to put on a front as what goes on in the hood. But what we see in video is not all what we do. There are somebody artist who do show the good side about black people. T.I got songs about love and respecting his woman as well as Nelly. Nelly made a valid point how are you going to judge him for one video in which a credit card scene was done in which it was the shorite girl idea. Not only that why even watch the video. The whole video was about sex so why even watch it if you don't agree.. It's hypocritical when people say I'm a crtic so that's my job. But if morally don't agree why do it casue it's about the money for the artist and critics. So if that's how they get there money then let them do it. People go to school to make money so if you got a chance to sell records then do it. If somebody let you *** them then that's on them. Music and video ares like relationships. Like you know when guys cheat on there girls and the girls take him back over and over and the dude still cheating then that's on her. So if you a video girl and you in the video and the guy is treating you like a doormat then you keep pputting yourself in that situation then that's on you. So how can you get mad when you allow them to treat you that way. I don't know them and you ain't got to listen to the music and as paretns you need to teach your kids although yes they are role models to the young, but still parents are parents and they suppose to set standards and morals for there kids. Educate your kids to make there on choices teach them about self-respect and sex and about there self-esteem. Cause I am a T.I fanatic and i like Nelly matter of Fact y favorite sond is Stand up featuring lil' Wayne and Trick Daddy and I love the Tip drill song I careless for the video, but it's not cause the chicks it's just because I don't watch late videos. I have a job and that don't interest me, but I love the song. Not to mention T.I is just sexy and thuggish and fine as can be.

Re: Hip Hop vs. America - Watch & Discuss!
Ok i watch the hip hop vs america last night and i agree with some of the things that was being said, the only thing i really didnt like it when they jumped on nelly about his TIP DRILL video i feel to believe that video wasnt made for kids under the age of 18 to look at it that is why the video was put on UNCUT. Uncut came on at 2am here so why is your child up that time of morning watching the video.. if u dont like the video or you dont want none of your children watching videos like that program your tv to parental control..Its sad when you jumping on rappers about whats going on in the world today but no one aint talking about the troops in iraq..no one has the parents of them white kids that when and shot up them college students because his girlfriend broke up with him...But soon as a rapper like T.I...Nelly...Snoop Dogg..etc put a song about BOOTY shaking its a big deal...get a damn grip its life..

i would have to say nelly made some valid points and i have to say it seems like people really point the finger at people like nelly and t.i. and what i dont understand is nothing is said about eminem dont get me wrong he is a good rapper and BET doesnt play his videos but he is hip hop and this is about hip hop i dont find nelly offensive if you are a parent and your CHILD saw the tip drill video why was your child up at 3am and i dont know why he is the one they point the finger at the girl didnt have to go along with it or as he said come up with the idea
