Re: Religion

I think you need to understand fully what is meant by religion.  This does not hold true for all blacks.  Christianity has taught some blacks to be acccepting of the status quo, and to count to heavily on faith for everything. It tends to be the unedcuated blacks that suffer from t his the most.  Instead of making changes some wait for GOD to find a way. There's nothign wrong with that but just like the public aid system many black rest too much on the instituition and no their own efforts.

I konw a guy that works as a HIV/AIDS conselor and has witness ednumerous times how some blacks want to soley use prayer as a way to heal, but at the sametiime not take their medication and or follow the doctors instructions becasue GOD is going to deliver.  Yes God can deliver but be also delivered the Meds to help the person get better.

So the topic of Religion is only used for the blacks that use Faith and Religion as a crutch.

"Christianity has been out way longer than slavery" You kind of phrased that funny. But... That's true. Chrisitanity didn't establish in America. Chrisitanity wasn't established by blacks. Peoples across the world put their belief in Chrisitanity. I believe the africans believed in Voodou before they came to america. Unless it depends on where they are from. This would be a good project for yo to research.

A lot of the nations mention in the old testament and new testament is filled with the middle eastern regions and some african nations; one is particular mentioned several times in the Bible is Ethiopia.( However not all of the african nations were practicing this belief at the time. They still believed in their gods and ancestors. Voodou started in Benin, Africa. The aim was to ward off evil and to have protection against evil. It was after slave trade Voodou was said to be used to do harm against others.

Re: Religion
Symone, again you make some really ignroant remarks. Africans believed in Voodoo before Christianity, are you serious. You really need to learn black history, sad sad sad. The concept of Christianity was born in various parts of Africa, and had you taken the time to even read the bible, you would know that the regions they speak about (KUSH) is in AFRICA!!!!! DUH! The pyramids in Nubia show the story of Christ LONG LONG LONG before the Europeans stole the story and made it as there own. Please do some research little one.

Re: Religion
i think it very important for us to truly know the history of the matter. Christ was not a blonde hair, blue eye white man. I think if anyone is going to argue on this subject fairly there should be some sort of background. i think we all need to remember that the topic of religion is very broad. If we are going to speak on the way religion affects black of this day and age we can't possibly stop at one religion. But to speak on Christianity: first this was not something that was created for us to go back and forth about race with. Christianity deals with the spiritual. yes during slavery much was put on the afterlife. However, Christianity (if followed and taught the way intended) could never be used as a crutch. The Bible tells us that faith without works is dead. Yes we as God's people are to know of His power, however, Jesus directed his people and left very specific instructions on what our purpose is in this life. I can understand the frustrastion with the example of the HIV/AIDS thing. i think it is based on that specific persons own relationship. Though some may be missing the their blessing in that form, if you believe in Christ you know that His will is all thatcan happen. Either it's your time or it's not. I know alot of people where the Lord allowed their bodies to be healed through medicines. however, i know many more where the Lord used them as a sheer testimony - it wasn;t in God's will for them to be on those medications because either it would have caused more harm to them or because the Lord used them to show of His own miraculous glory ( cancer or other diseases completely vanishing with no medical explanation). So again the Lord's will was not for His people ( whether black, pink, gray or whatever) to be weak or anything like that. But i think the prayers that black slaves offered up to God were just as important as anything else involved. Christianity stuck so much with blacks because the slaves saw someone (someone that even the whites had to bow to) that loved them equally and offered an emancipation that went beyond physical - and this was something that the white masters could never take away. I personllay think it uplifted us and brought forth a one of the first forums that allowed black people to express ourselves in many ways (aka the black church).
