Top 25 Events That (Mis) Shaped Black America
While watching this, I found it very interesting, in that most of the events it refers to, points straight to BET. For example; most of the video shown on BET dehumanize, black women, glorifies jewellery and makes it seems that the "bling bling" is the most important thing in life.
One other item that should also have been included is the way black youths now dress, with their clothes five size larger, or falling off their butt. This is also a very normal thing on BET.
In the future when you are putting together a list, please look to see where BET fits in or affects this list.

I agree with you dalke2003. Hopefully, this is a beginning for BET. This was a great program and very gutsy for BET to air. It's all about getting the message out to the right people in the right venue and this was it.

Look at the number of responses the positive posts have in oppose to the negative ones the promote time consuming arguments.
-------------------------------------------------
If it were today's individuals living back in the day, you can forget about civil rights supporters. I mean that, because no one knows what to say about posts that involve intellect or require some actually thinking or research. I won't let the trend continue in my house hold though (my mom didn't either). "An uneducated mind is two steps behind" - Blu.
Spend less time on hate'n, and more time on actually becoming something, and maybe we can elminate the Black on Black BS.

Re: Top 25 Events That (Mis) Shaped Black America
I think the list hit the nail on the head in so many ways. I think we should spend less time pointing the finger at BET and other media outlets and hold ourselves and our people accountable.
The biggest takeaway I witness is how our people are systematically to eliminate themselves. I know this sounds cliche but its true. Many of the itmes on the list were meant to keep blacks controlled. Many dont like to hear it but Christianity has been a major tool. Not for all, but many blacks in the Church count on God for everything with NO personal effort. It has also gottne blacks to accept the status quo cuz it will be alright in heaven. Ive even seen instances where some people are counting on God to heal their aliments but not taking medicine and following the instructions of the Dr.
Where and when did it become social acceptable for some black to think beging DUMB is cool. Its like for certain blacks its a lost cause, Don't wanna be smart, wanna stay high or drunk, smoke the worst cigarettes (menthol 100's), etc its like our people pick and embrace the worse habits/activities.

Unfortunately I was unable to catch the airing of this special so I don't know what was discussed. However, I know they should have mentioned the drug epidemic that went on in our communities, isn't that when our communities really began to be messed up? Isn't that when women stopped taking care of their homes because they were out on the streets looking for a way to cop another hit? Isn't that when our fathers start going to prison for slanging? Isn't that when our children had no direction? Girls didn't know what it was to respect themselves and boys didn't know how to respect women. We lost all pride in ourselves and what we built fell back down. No you can't blame hip hop for everything. However those ghetto hoodlums are product of the communities that were hit by the drug epidemic and they are making music.

I also agree with trade04. People are putting the fault/blame on everyone else except themselves. You cannot just sit back and expect (good)things to be handed to you. The lord cannot hand you a job without you putting in the effort to look for one etc. I think a lot o people have gotten lazy. Everything takes effort from you, if you got it easy that means it isn't right.

Re: Top 25 Events That (Mis) Shaped Black America
On another event that is currently mishaping not only Black America but everyone with a conviction... It really should be against the law for a company to not hire someone because they have a conviction on their record. Today, I was terminated due to a conviction that I didn't even know about. Society really expect us to raise a family working at MacDonalds when cost of living is constantly on the rise. When people check 'yes' when they are asked 'have they ever been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor', they are sometimes not considered for the job, no matter how experienced they are. That is why people are forced to do such things like rob people, sell drugs, steal copper, etc., etc. That is why recidivism is so high nowadays also. Prison time is NOT what we need. We need equal opportunity. Is our equal opportunity taken from us when we go to jail? Are we still 'free' in the land of the 'free'. 4 out of every 6 people have tried to even go to the military (including myself) but was turned away because of past charges on our criminal records. I, right along with several million other people, really wish that could be against the law for a company to not hire you because of a prior conviction.

Trade/Symone your posts really don't make sense. When BET is black owned, then sells out, we are putting the blame on ourselves for selling out our own people for $$$.Here are 10 events that mishaped black america IN MY OPINION1.Slavery 2. Chain Gangs, Jim Crow Laws3. DE-Segregation4. Genocide of the Indians (Many were black, you know your granny was an Indian)5. Marcus Garvey's Death6. Malcom X's Death, Martin Luther King's Death 7. TV, the great brainwasher8. Relaxed Hair9. The trick to "move" to white america, and not build black america10. Selling out hip hop to the white man.
