Re: Hip Hop Vs. America
I already have a problem with this thread. First of all, what are we defining here? Hip-hop is a culture rich in traditions, practices and history. It is not merely it's music. Hip-hop is a cultural tradition, just like other countries/ethnicities have cultural practices as well. Don't generalize. Now, about RAP. Rap is the type of music that we hear. Rap is what is being pushed. And there are so many different kinds. I believe that it is disingenuous to claim to be for helping the black community (as BET so often does), yet you attempt to destroy it all in the interest of the white man's dollar as well by playing rap videos that aren't at all of any substance, and is counter productive to what can really help us. I've noticed that you're in the business of selling stereotypes. You want to lift the community up, but you lower us down in such a way by constantly playing videos that are harmful to our people. What do I think about violent lyrics and degrading images in mainstream rap videos? I feel that it's a minstrel show, the likes of which are actually rivaling the Victorian Era up to the Jazz age, and even past such. What this portrays about Black America is absolutely nothing positive. It portrays that black women are merely sexual objects to be had. That we're wanton creatures who do nothing more than shake our behinds before a camera for a bit of money. That our men are irresponsible, cowardly, prone to criminality, and ultimately, exist for the sole enjoyment and whims of white people, in particular, white women. Images like these cross the oceans into other countries where people have had little to no encounters with Black people. I've been to Japan. I've gotten people who think that black women are simply a piece of ***. I've been approached and asked about rap, when I don't even LISTEN to new rap. I'm withholding my dollar, and my viewership of BET and Viacom until you both get it together.

Hip-Hop doesn't have to use vulgar language or offensive videos to get a message across--instead of falling into the trap of degrading one's self for monetary gain, try using respect for black culture and history when creating something that will be heard by millions.

It don't bother me, only because I don't listen to it. I mean I do, depending on the beat of the songs, and who's sanging it or whatever. I'm not against it and I'm not for it, because it doesn't bother me, and it shouldn't bother no one else. It doesn't hurt to turn the channel or to switch to a different radio station. If you're there just listening to it, then there's reason you're just sitting there like "okay?". Yeah it does degrade black people the way the videos are made, girls dress, and the explicit lyrics. It makes us look like we're ignorant, and people just stereotype us. But there are plenty of white, hispanic, and even asian people I know that listens to this music and have no problem, so why are they only looking at black people? This question should be asked to everyone of different races, cultures, or whatever else. It's not a problem unless it's black. If it was such a problem now, then why is BET, MTV still showing the videos. So therefore, there it isn't a big problem.
