Willie not wanting to go to a school dominated to African American's
The overrall of the show needed work.. but was a positive black reality based show.
The last episode I want to touch on is when Garnnett,Willie,Mackenzy, and Ashley were outside talking about there future, and what college they wanted to go to. How Gar, Mackenzy, and Ashley said that they wanted to go to a more dominated to black american school, and how Willie wanted to go to a non dominated black school. The two of them were talking and made a valid point about how Willie is looked upon as more excepted because she's lighter, she has curlier hair... and that naturally she would want to be around more whites. Ashley's father touched on how black schools touch more on how to deal with corporate america, then a white school..... What do you think about that whole scene?

Re: Willie not wanting to go to a school dominated to African American's
Considering, that I am a product of generations of HBCU. I understand what Ashley's dad meant. Going to a HBCU you establish life long relationships with other black professional's.This came in play when Ashley said that her dad was opening up a surgical center and had a lot of white people trying to stop him. He was able to come together with other blacks from his college days and overcome there opposition. It is power in numbers and the support of others. As, for Willie especially being mix and light skin with natural curly hair. She, has probably been discriminated against amoung her own race which is black and has made her skeptical to be in a all black environment. Eventhough, both my parents are black I have felt this type of discrimination from other blacks just because of my fair skin. It happens. Luckily, I come from a strong black family that is proud of our heritage. Willie father is white and that might not be something that her family really acknowledges. But in the real world she is considered and viewed as black.

I HAD A CHOICE OF GOING TO SEVERAL HBCU'S BUT I JUST RATHER NOT...I LIKE TO BE AROUND ALL RACES NOT JUST MOSTLY BLACK THOUGH, I LIKE TO LEARN ABOUT DIFFERENT PEOPLE AND DIFFERENT CULTURES AND BE SURROUNDED BY DIFFERENT RACES. HBCU'S ARE JUST NOT FOR ME SO I SEE WHERE WILLIE MAY BE COMING FROM.

Although I agreed with Ashley, somewhat, I felt that the girls were making Willie feel bad.My opinion is that, I believe that HBCU's are very valuable but some diversity has to be present in my life.

I know exactly where Ashley is coming from because I have been in a diverse school all my life and to be honest I cant wait to get around alot of black ppl. I know it sounds crazy but its just one of those things.
However, I understod where Willie was coming from until she said "black ppl as a whole are inferior" now I might have been hearing things, Im not sure but that, to me, makes it seem like to her going to a HBCU would be just like going to a ghetto family reunion and thats not the case at all.

Re: Willie not wanting to go to a school dominated to African American's
i think it is good for those girls to go out and go to a hbcu college... as ashley's father said that type of college prepares them on how to handle with corporate america... it show's them there side of who they are... it touches subjects in african art/history that a white college wouldn't. It was very interesting on how they knew that Willie was treated differently then the other's because of her skin, and hair..... and that sadly to say is very true. But sadly to say we as black people do the same thing... We think beautiful is someone who is light skin.. or light brown... we never say someone is beautiful if there dark... it's like we have this slavery mentality on our own race and we don't even know it.

Re: Willie not wanting to go to a school dominated to African American's
I disagree with Willie's statement about going to a school with more diversity. As a student attending one of the nation's most prestigous HBCU's, I am surrounded by diverse cultures everytime I walk across the yard or attend one of my classes. I initially chose to attend an HBCU for the same reasons as Ashley & Garnett, to be around more people of my culture and ethnic background. However upon my arrival on campus and ever since that day, I've come to realize that the african-american community is vastly diverse within itself. I have the immense privilege of studying with people from Nigerie, Gahana, South Africa, Sierra Leone and soo many different countries and providences in Africa. I am friends with people from Jamaica, Trinidad, Barbados, the Bahamas and numerous other Carribbean Islands. Even though my school is predominantly black, there are people with Asian, Indian, Middle Eastern and even Caucasian backgrounds that matriculate here. Then don't let me get started on the various students that come from the 50 states that comprise America and the sub-cultures they bring with them. I've learned so much different slang terminoligies and ways of life in my studies here, that I know I'll be a more well-rounded individual once I graduate. As for Willie, I would think she most of all would want to delve into a more diverse environment culture wise. I mean the community she's grown up in really wasn't that diverse in nature. Though Baldwin Hills is an affluent black community, as shown the majority of the schools she's attended throughout her life and probably most of her friends outside of the cast have been lily white. Inevitably the college she'll probably attend will be the same. I'd think she'd want to branch out and experience something different. There's a different level of support in the HBCU community. Not only are u offered the opportunity to learn soo much more about your culture & history, but you are pushed harder. You have people who can relate to your struggles and professors really want to see u succeed because they know you are the future of black america. They know that in the real world u are going to have to fight for every opportunity that u get so they prepare u for it.

Ashley's father touched on how black schools touch more on how to deal with corporate america, then a white school..... What do you think about that whole scene? well first off, i would like to say...you should only use big words if you know how to use them. the word is "predominate" not "dominated". but other than that..i love that you brought up this topic. Most HBCU's are prestiguous universities that are extremely diverse cultural wise. They also prepare you greatly for becoming successful in corporate america...but some on the otherhand are pretty bad ["ghetto" for a lack of better words type schools that dont provide a quality education]. If you look at schools like Morehouse, Spelman, Howard, Hampton, and Tuskegee...especially morehouse and spelman, those are schools that have students who are typically upper class and are surrounded by whites for the most part of their lives. Their almost the black Harvard as most people call it. There are some drawbacks to going to these schools though, such as the lack of racial diversity and the lack of a great variety of majors offered. [which isnt good for me..Im a future fashion marketing and dance majors] There are a few white and hispanic faces..there are a lot at Tuskegee, but it doesnt give you the FULL college effect. I dont really agree with the whole "lighter skin" is more acceptable to whites thing though. At my school, the whites love the "very few" darker skinned women because of their beautiful skin. I personally envy women with chocolate skin. Willie was right with her argument of being in a diverse environment, Ashley was also right as well. It isnt a good thing to isolate yourself with your "own kind" because it doesnt prepare you to be able to socialize and handle yourself in that type of environment. Some people come out of HBCU's with a chip on their shoulder and not being able to be diverse with others. You just have to weigh the odds and figure out what's best for you.

Re: Willie not wanting to go to a school dominated to African American's
From someone who attends an HBCU, you have the rest of your lives to be around white ppl. As mentioned before, at certain schools, particularly the private ones, there is the oppurtunity to interact with students of different backgrounds. All black people are not the same, so of course there is some form of diversity on an HBCU campus. At private schools inparticular, you have different economic and social classes, as well as people from all of the united states, and some from African countries as well. This is not something I read in a book or saw on tv, the right HBCU will prepare you not only for the real world, but prepare you as an African American in the real world. True there are some down sides, like not having hot water for a few days and long financial aid lines (that's why you get scholarships and you don't have to stand in those lines), but the HBCU is an experience that every African American should have. The friends and the connections you make, in addition to the memories from an HBCU are priceless. Eventually, you can look back on the bad times and laugh.
